What is Structural Integration?

Structural Integration (SI) is a process that combines therapeutic touch with education and movement to restore ease in the body.

The theories behind this method were developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf. A researcher in organic chemistry, she went on to explore diverse systems of healing including homeopathic, osteopathic, chiropractic, and yoga. Dr. Rolf’s work brought to light the relationship of proper alignment in our bodies and improved function--she called her work Structural Integration.

Balancing tension in our soft tissue is the focus of each Structural Integration session. Fascia is a complex network that reaches throughout our entire body like a web, surrounding nerves, blood vessels, muscles, bones and organs. Healthy fascia glides easily. Injuries, surgery, and everyday habits can create adhesions in our fascia. These restrictions can pull our body systems out of proper alignment, creating a variety of symptoms.

SI looks beyond an individual symptom or injury and evaluates the body as a whole to find the “why” behind the acute issue.

Through a series of sessions, we work to soften the connective tissue while educating patients on how to listen to their bodies so they can let go of old habits in order to embrace functional, energetic movement. When the body is able to move without restriction, it can begin to heal.

What Sets Keystone Apart?

My experience in the healthcare industry allows me view each session with a unique perspective. My approach to Structural Integration is to start with your story. Where is your pain or discomfort? What is your lifestyle like? What are your wellness goals? From there we can make a plan that works for you.

Structural Integration is a manual therapy in which I manipulate the soft tissue with my hands. My therapeutic techniques have been developed over many years, working with diverse clients and attending specialized continuing education classes. Often described by clients as “light touch,” it is this sensitive touch that allows me to locate and release the restrictions in your tissue.

Muscle, nerves, scars - they all have a unique feel and must be treated differently. I work within your level of comfort to encourage change in the tissue.
